Preparing Your Device for USBwatch
Your preipheral device’s printed circuit board must have an RS-232 port on it, correctly configured to be able to communicate with a PC. A Microchip PicDem USB board can be used, if it is connected to a Null Modem. (We use a Radio Shack 9-pin Null Modem, followed by a F/F gender changer.)
If you are using a demo board like microEngineering Labs’ PicProto USB board which doesn’t have RS-232 interface already on it, but which does have a prototyping area, you can add the simple circuitry yourself. We show you how.
USBwatch has two software elements:
Peripheral programs generated by HIDmaker contain code with conditional compile directives that can be set to activate the USBwatch capability. With some languages, the process is controlled entirely by just #define-ing a single item called USB_WATCH. If this item is defined, then the USBwatch code will be compiled and activated.
